Complex Fracture Repair

The principles of bone or fracture repair are essentially the same across all species.

In repairing a broken bone, the fracture fragments need to be stabilized to allow a healthy blood supply to enter the region and elicit cellular repair.

Once fracture healing and remodeling is complete, the bone generally can achieve its original structural strength.

A variety of methods are utilized to stabilize the fracture fragments including, but not limited to, bone plates, screws, interfragmentary and intramedullary pins, wire, interlocking nails, and external skeletal fixation.
